LOR for Army

I am a new nurse and have been working for a little over three months. I am very concerned on how to get Letters of Recommendation for my Army application packet. I don't want to mess up my current job just because I want to go into the Army, which we all know there is no garantee at getting in.

How have others gone about getting their LOR without getting themselves fired from their current employer? I just feel asking a LOR from your current employer is so risky, especially since I've only been employed a few months. Any insite would be greatly appreciated.

Since I haven't been at my job for very long either, and am in the same situation, I will be interested to see what kind of advice comes about. I've yet to ask my nurse manager for a LOR as well for the very same reasons you haven't.. but when I finally do I'm going to just go into it being up front and honest and hope for the best! But its definitely nerve wracking when jobs are so hard to come by anymore..

Good luck to you, btw, in not only getting the LOR but also for selection. I will be hoping for the best for both of us! :]

I would just be honest -- tell your people that you are exploring the possibility of serving our country. If they fault you for that, then that might not be the best person to write your LOR in the first place!

I was in a slightly different position because when I started looking into the Army Nurse Corps in late 2009/early 2010, I had been with the same employer/ER for nearly five years. They weren't happy to hear I was possibly leaving, but they supported me. I told them it was a long process with the probability that I wouldn't even be selected. Between the time I asked for the LORs and actually leaving for the Army, it was about 15 months.

Good luck!!
