Looking for 3x12s, but not typical bedside position

Howdy! ?

I am currently a cath lab nurse. I've been doing this for about 1.5 years now. I love most aspects of the job. However, the call requirements are starting to burn me out. I like the 4x10 shifts, but because of call requirements, and just general late hours, I end up being at the job 45-55 hours a week (plus having to hold the pager at home).

I am reaching out on here to see if anyone would share their 3x12 job that isn't the standard bedside job (ICU, PCU, M/S, etc.), and what you like/dislike about it.

I appreciate you in advance!

Specializes in Critical Care, Capacity/Bed Management.

I currently work full time (12 hours) in a non-clinical role. I work in bed management for a large urban hospital. My position consists of reviewing charts and assigning them to the appropriate physician team and then assigning beds as they become available.

It is a lot of triaging and working closely with the charge nurses and physicians. I did ICU for quite a long time and felt like I wanted to try something different without losing the critical thinking skills.

Specializes in Dialysis.

I've been doing 3 twelves in outpatient hemodialysis for 10 years. I like that the hours and patients are predictable. No nights, no Sundays and no call requirements. 4am-4pm was difficult to adjust to, but I've been able to be at every afternoon school event and home in time to cook dinner so it's worth the sacrificed sleep.

Specializes in Med-Surg, NICU.

I am an Urgent Care NP, but we have nurses in urgent care as well. We work 3 12s per week with some weekends and holidays.

Also, there are retail clinics (think CVS Minute Clinic) where it is 38 hours one week and 27 hours the next (10 hours weekdays and 7-8 hrs on weekends). So not quite 3 12s, but definitely not a Monday-Friday.
