Looking for US Guided Perpherial IV insertion policies and Nurse competencies.

Please send me a pm and I can help you with this.....all of our IV team does this.....its a little harder than it looks though and you have to put certain safequards into place. I did write the steps and protocol into our new peripheral protocol and can tell you what you need to do from our experiences and my recent search of the literature

Our nurses trained to do this about 2yrs ago. It has made much progress since. This skill will be very helpful to your ED.

I would love some information as I am an ED nurse and was using the ultrasound machine successfully to insert IVs in difficult stick patients until my nurse manager questioned if this was in the nurse's scope and acceptable for me to do it.

Yes...I can give you some current recommendations presented at the 2009 American Vascular Association in 2009...just PM me and I will give all I have.....there are more recommendations and restrictions than you would think in order to really practice safely. In addition. I have lots of practical experience and concur with AVA

There is also a class offered at the AVA conference one of the breakout sessions she was very helpful when I made our policy and procedure, we made it very specific for the nurse.:)

All 27 nurses on our IV team are trained to insert peripheral IV's using ultrasound guidance. I can't imagine why your manager wondered if it were in your scope of practice...it's non invasive and you're not diagnosing anything. Our LPNs also use it when needed. I can't imagine not having that tool to help with very difficult IV sticks.

We don't have a specific policy, just that the nurses need to be trained to use it before doing it independently.
