I am a nursing student planning on becoming a CNM. I am currently in a class where I need to write an argument paper on a topic related to my career field. I am supposed take a side on an issue with two clear opposing views. It needs to be something that is a "value conflict" a midwife would encounter, with two sides that can each be supported by evidence/research. If anyone could give me any suggestions for a topic, that would be great!

The obvious one that comes to my mind would be home vs hospital birth. How about that one? :)

That's the direction I'd like to go in, but I'm having trouble coming up with a good thesis. As far as the legal aspect goes, home birth with a CNM is legal, just difficult. And I can't just say "women should give birth at home" because there are instances where they shouldn't. Maybe something along the lines of CNMs should be able to attend homebirths for women with healthy pregnancies without physician backup? But then what happens if they need to go to the hospital? I just can't pinpoint exactly what I want to argue.

The topic of induction comes to my mind. There should be plenty of research on that.
Oh, I love the induction idea. I have loads of personal experience in that one. (60 hour induced labor with every form of unnecessary intervention possible, resulting in eventual emergency c-section)

circumcision? Not that CNMs do them, but I am sure they get lots of questions about it! I always talked about it with my doula clients.
thanks for the ideas, I think I'm going to go with the home birth topic. Another question--I am probably going to do an online midwifery course such as Frontier after i finish nursing school, but i'm not sure how to go about finding a preceptor. Any ideas?
I wouldn't worry about it just yet since you need a year's RN experience before going in. That'll give you plenty of time to make some professional contacts. :)
