Looking to move to S. La.

I'm an R.N. who spent almost 20 years living and working in Houston, mostly the Texas Medical Center in ICU. After taking some time off for my family, I'm thinking about leaving Houston altogether--I want a slower pace where people are more friendly. I've got some family in the Lafayette and Houma areas. I know there will be a pay cut. I'd maybe even like something less acute like med/surg or even home health. Does anyone know about a pay scale? What are the nurse/patient ratios on the floor?

I am from Baton Rouge originally, and I have looked into going back when I graduate nursing school. I am not sure about pay scale, but Lafayette has the only magnet hospital in louisiana, last time I checked. Here is a link to their website - I was intrigued! Good luck!

Actually East Jefferson Hospital and Ochsner Hospital are both magnet hospitals. Ochsner just aquired magnet status from what I've heard. I live in the N.O. metro area but many of my co-workers commute from Houma and Lockport. I don't know if that would be an option for you but you could look at doing home health with one of the big players in N.O., but possibly take assignments closer to your home. Maybe Luling, etc. I'm sure you could work it out.

This may help keep you from having to take a huge paycut but not having to travel too much either. There are so many HH positions available around here right now I'm sure you won't have any trouble finding one.

There's also a clinic that opened in Luling post-Katrina called St. Charles Community Health Center that offer a variety of health care services. They were looking for RN's recently, not sure if they still are. Good luck!

Thanks so much everyone! I've been off 2 years taking care of elderly family members. And the more I go back to La., the more I realize that this is where I want to be. I don't want to commute to New Orleans because I just came from a big city (I lived very close to the Texas Medical Center--which is like a city in itself), and worked at a huge hospital (very impersonal). The more I stay away, the more I realize this is not what I want out of life. I'm just over the fast pace, people being so stressed out, the status symbols, and looking at one concrete building after another.

Considering a travel assignment in Gretna, LA. Anyone have any input?
