L&D Practicum Question

Published

I'm starting my senior practicum in L&D next week and I was wondering if anyone had suggestions about what to review ahead of time? If you've had students, what do you expect from them?

I'm really excited about it, yet extremely nervous and any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there and welcome.

First of all, relax; the only expectation I have of students is to be interested in learning, assisting and growing. Trust me, we do NOT expect you to "know" all that much about L/D. We DO expect you to be "in there" with us, helping, asking questions and being interested. I love teaching students. I had one following me yesterday I found a delight. He was hard-working and full of questions and was respectful and kind to the patients throughout that day. He was not afraid to ask me questions and get in there and help out. That is all I could ever ask. Know, also, what you are allowed to do in the way of patient care, and what your limits are, as defined by your school. And VOLUNTEER to do those things, be they starting IV's, placing foley catheters, or bathing babies. Most nursing students learn best, with "hands on" work.

Most importantly, I hope you enjoy your clinical experience. Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions, also, but try to be aware when it may not be a good time to do so. If the staff are busy and preoccupied when you ask, please be patient and wait for "downtime" to ask questions again. Most of us really are glad to be working where we do and love to share our experience and knowledge with our students.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Thank you for a reply to my question! I started practicum and I'm having a blast so far! I've been soaking up all the knowledge provided by my preceptor and I'm trying to ask as many questions as I can!
