what to know for pp

Hi,

I graduate w/ my bsn & start nursing on a pp floor this june. I was wondering what you experienced pp nurses would suggest I have a solid understanding of before I start orientation. Any other general advice would be great too! Thanks bunches!

ps----I am thrilled to start off in pp!!! :)

Well I can't say I'm experienced as I've only been in PP for about five months now but I'd say knowing the terminology (fundus/lochia/etc.) and understanding labs (hep, GBS, CBC) is important. Know the normal values for newborns and moms when it comes to vital signs. Review the proper way to do head to toes on newborns and fundal exams on moms. Those are a big part of our focus every day.

I think most you will learn on the job!

The best thing I have done so far is when I started and got off orientation I took a copy home of the standing orders for vag deliveries and for c-sections and that way I kind of know what to expect when (i.e. when to INT patients, when epidurals are pulled, when foleys come out, etc.).
