I haven't even been a nurse for a year yet and I see that I'm already starting to forget some of my knowledge base that I don't use or see everyday on my floor. What do you seasoned nurses suggest I do to keep up with my nursing knowledge? Reading nursing magazines is not an option for me because I will not keep up with it if I have to read long articles. Do you know of any books/magazines that may have questions or case studies that i can do maybe once a week? I'm open to any suggestions. Thank you.

What works for one is, perhaps, not what is best for another....
I like to read. I read on line bunches. I read journals bunches. I read lots of patient records and individual professional notes. I read posts on allnurses which cause me to think critically about my patients and my nursing practice.

The thing that has taught me more is the fact that I'm willing to ask questions about what I do not know. There is no shame in not knowing. Anyone that thinks they know everything is dangerous. Just remember to ask what you are not sure about. Read up on meds, dz. processes, lab values, etc. that are pertinent to a particular situation. Nursing is often a collaborative process among an interdisciplinary team. Utilize your peer/colleages. This promotes a win/win scenario for all participants. Nursing, like medicine is a "practice". I continue to learn something everyday after 37 years of practice. I've also seen many changes during these years. Medicine is not static. Subscribe to the philosophy, question everything.
