Just starting..HELP

HEllo! This is my first time using this site and I thought it would be the perfect place to help get information!

I am just starting and definitely wanting to start a career in nursing. I graduated high school in 2009 and went to an online school for residential planning. I graduated with a diploma but after that my brother got diagnosed with Leukemia. We have had many of my family members have cancer and pass from it but when my brother got diagnosed I felt a whole different feeling!

Anyway; thats what gave me the sudden realization of wanting to further my way of helping people and get into the medical career. I currently work at a hospital in Environmental Services department and love to see the patients and make them smile.

I know that in 2020 they are going to only start highering nurses with a bachelors degree and living on an island I have to do schooling online and continue to work fulltime. Heres my problem....i dontk now where to start! There are so many different types of nursing. I want to become a BSN (I think thats a bachelors in nursing?) But then found out I need to get an RN before becoming a BSN I believe.

I am so lost but looking to begin ASAP and have a quick way through it to start my nursing career. I like the excitement so want to either be in the ER, OR or in LDRP.

PLEASE HELP ME FIGURE OUT WHERE TO BEGIN!

    So sorry to hear about your brother, but it's great that you feel called to nursing! There are many options in regards to nursing school. Many places are looking to hire people with a Bachelors in Nursing (BSN) now. If you already have a Bachelors in another subject then you could consider looking into a transfer to nursing program. Otherwise many schools offer year round schooling and you can complete your Bachelors in 3 years. I would search online BSN programs and see what is offered if you don't have a school near you.

    I moved your post from the distance learning forum to the pre-nursing student forum, which is more a more appropriate location for your situation.

    There are a few pathways to become an RN, and a BSN is one. Some people choose diploma programs (more rare now), some choose Associates degree programs. There is no definitive time when (or even if) a BSN would be required for initial entry as an RN, so I am not sure where you heard it would happen by the year 2020.

My hospital also told me that everyone is looking to higher a (BSN) and if they already work there and the hospital will keep them; then they will pay for the schooling for a BSN. But now they are only hiring BSN's. My problem I feel is that I did go to school after high school but graduated with a diploma and it was specified towards a specific career (Residential Planning - designing small businesses and houses). I do not think I took any of the prerequisites most are requiring so I feel I'm starting from scratch. I wouldn't mind at all doing year round schooling to complete bachelors in 3 years but I cannot find the school that has that option. I only see RN to BSN options for a year and a half but I have no nursing experience yet. This is where I am getting super confused now :-/

    I also live on Nantucket Island so there are definitely no schools near me. The island is 30 miles out to sea off of hyannis, cape cod. Thats why I have to look into online schools.

    I will try to find my post there. My hospital HR Coordinator told me that hospitals are going to change to only hiring BSN's and any RN's who don't have it are going to do courses to become BSN certified.

    First of all in different colleges you can get your ADN or go straight for the BSN the only difference there are the prerequisite classes you will need, for the BSN there are a couple more before you get in, it really depends on the college which prereques they are. However, you really can't get into any RN Program right now, you first have to do your prerequisite classes and for that you will have to get the needed classes from the college you choose...     There are no online programs for pre-licensure students. There are some distance options for people who are LPNs or paramedics, among other things, but you will have to do clinicals in person to become an RN. You might be able to knock out some nursing pre-reqs online, such as A&P I and II, Micro, etc.

    I agree with what has been posted so far. If I understand correctly, your looking for a ADN or BSN class online ? I've researched that myself in the past and it doesn't seem to be an option. You will need to get your RN, then you can do a BSN online. You will still have to find a way to complete clinicals.

    Other options include LVN to RN online and Paramedic to RN online. There are online Paramedic schools, but you have to spend a week or two out of town for practical training and testing. In your situation, this would afford you the opportunity to do a lot of your work online.
