Just applied to OCC

U.S.A. Michigan

I applied with a 3.88, what are your thoughts about me getting in?? I know last year they accepted all the way down to a 3.4 because of the grant for the accelerated program, but I'm paranoid!!

Has anyone heard any rumors about what GPA's are going to be applying, or if the grant will be given again??

Any info will be appreciated

Thanks

Wow - that's a good GPA! I think you'll get in for sure!

I still have to take 3 more classes, but I'm going to apply next month or earlier if I can. I have a 3.95 - and I'm hoping I can get into the accelerated ADN. I heard rumors they might not be having it again next year, can anybody confirm/deny?

Did you apply for the LPN program or RN? I applied for the LPN program and I have a 3.85. Although I just checked my summer grades online and my A&P II teacher gave me an A- when I should have an A. I am disputing it since it would bring me down to a 3.8 even. I think I will be fine no matter what but you just never know.

Also I had gone to the Nursing info session in June and they said they were not sure about the accelerated ADN program and couldn't promise it would be around next year. They also said the lowest GPA accepted for both the LPN and RN last year was a 3.5.

how can u apply if u still have 3 classes to take??

my counselor told me they will "probably" have the accelerated program again, but he didn't make any promises

applying to ADN with a 3.97 just saw my grade and micro teacher gave me an A instead of a B. i don't know why but i wont complain

Does anyone know when the deadline to apply is for the OCC accelerated ADN? Is it Dec 15th like the regular ADN program? And do you know how many people are accepted? My counselor never told me anything about the accelerated program. I just applied for LPN but this accelerated ADN sounds like the better route to go.

The accelerated ADN is a division of the RN program. This past year was the first year they offered it. Students didn't "apply" to the accelerated RN program; everyone merely applied to a program whether it was LPN or RN.

OCC then offered students accepted into the RN program the option of taking the regular route or "accelerated" route. I believe there were 60 spots in the accelerated program that were offered to those with the highest rankings/ GPAs first. If those students declined and preferred the regular route then some spots were available for students with slightly lower GPAs/rankings to enter the accelerated program. I remember reading the lowest GPA for a student who was able to get in the accelerated program was a 3.8.

The accelerated program may or may not be offered again next year. It's the exact same program and courses as the ADN, but I believe you just go straight through and don't have any breaks; I believe it puts you out a semester earlier than the regular program.

Hope that helped clear up what the program was for you dwern! If you have further questions about program specifics I always recommend talking to the nursing office as they are the authority and are a more reliable source than internet forums.

Thanks for the info WayneStateKatie. There really is not much info out there about it on the internet. Not even on OCC's nursing website. I will definitely call the Nursing dept on Monday. If I do go the RN route instead of LPN it means I have 2 more pre-reqs to take this fall and one is already full. I wish I had known more about this accelerated program sooner. Thanks again!

Denise:nurse:

accelerated starts in may instead of September with no break during the program. for example, if you were to be accepted this year the accelerated prog would go. SUMMER 1 2009, SUMMER 2 2009, FALL 2009, WINTER 2010, SUMMER 1 2010 finished around the end of june.

Regular program would be...FALL 2009, WINTER 2010, SUMMER 1 2010, SUMMER 2 2010 YOU GET A BREAK, FALL 2010, WINTER 2011 finished the end of april

saves you about 10 months of time!!

Semi colons; fancy.

Thanks fetachz. Have you heard anything on what the lowest GPA they accepted last year for accelerated ADN? The other girl said 3.8 which I can believe that if it's only thr top 60. My GPA for all my LPN pre-reqs is a 3.86 but when you factor in the additional pre-reqs needed for the RN program I only have a 3.68 so I'm very nervous. Do I accept the LPN since it's a sure thing or do I risk it and go for accelerated RN? The regular RN just takes too long and I really want to start my nurse career sooner. Anyway, thanks for all the info.

think of it like this...

as an RN you'll be starting at close to $55K a year. As an LPN you'll start at around $35k a year.

so even if you do the LPN, and start making money right away, waiting to do the RN will net you $100K more within 5 years.

i say do the RN no matter what.

Theoretically you'll be doing this the rest of your life so whats the big deal if you have to wait another year?? especially if it makes you that much more money??

my 2 cents.
