Depending on the area and the shortage of nurses, there are many different types of employers that would be willing to hire a new grad. I live in an area that has a massive shortage of nurses, thus a new grad could be hired in a physician's private practice, prison, juvenile detention, county jail, public health, social and family services, school nursing, and of course hospital nursing.

On the flip side, there are many areas across the country where these type of institutions require hospital experience. Look in the employment section of your local newspaper and you can see who is looking for nurses. Also, do a little research on your county and city websites for available positions.

I agree with sistermike it does depend alot on your location.....where I am there isn't much of a nsg shortage. It is pretty competitive for new grads to get on with the hospitals - just b/c the local nsg schools are graduating so many now. I ended up in LTC as a new grad on the night shift b/c that is all that was available - yeah it sucked but at least it was a job. If I was one of those who was really picky about wanting to work L&D, ER, ect I would have had to relocate to where I could find a job....fine by me but my DH is the one who doesnt want to.
