Job as Tech...?

Hello, out of curiosity, why do you say that the hospital won't hire you after graduation? I know they love BSNs but you never know.

I believe that you should probably stay where you at to gain more hands on experience. I do understand that you would like to go and get your foot in the door at a hospital that will possibly hire you, but would you be able to get and secure a job sometime soon and will they even have openings when you're ready to graduate. Not trying to be negative, just wasn't sure if that was an alternative that was already thought of.

Also, would you be able to support you and your family with such a drastic pay difference?

You could quite possibly begin your search for another job at another hospital but I wouldn't just discredit your current hospital just yet, after all you said it was not magnet recognized and that is eventually you want to end up... just my thoughts

The reason I say they probably won't hire me is because they are a Magnet hospital, & apparently they've only hired 5 ADNs in the past year. They prefer BSNs/MSNs...but that's definitely not going to stop me from applying everywhere & anywhere within this place!!

I was thinking of maybe working PRN at another facility as well as where I am now...most places will hire from within first, so that's why I wanted to get my foot in the door...

And you're right, I wouldn't be able to afford to provide for my son, let alone have insurance.

But because you are going back to school for your BSN, they may consider you. I know of Magnet facilities who prefers nurses with their BSN/MSN *OR* nurses with an ADN currently enrolled in school to get their BSN. It doesn't hurt to try!

I'm just worried that you will apply and a potential employer will ask why you have no experience with your ADN. Not that they expect everyone to work in school, but it may be off-putting to some. I would try to find employment anywhere you can right now. You can try for a PRN position but those are usually for nurses with at least a couple of years of experience because those areas have very little orientation. Not suitable for new grads, but then again every hospital is different. A hospital may offer a PRN position for new grads with a very thorough orientation, so it just depends.

I actually meant was magnet recognized... shouldnt have been a "NOT"... *stupid dictation software*

But as previously suggested, its a great thing for them to be Magnet and since you already work there, its more likely that they'd hire internal versus looking at outside applicants. Thats what my magnet hospital does.

My vote would be to stay where you're at. Try to get hired there, I think you've got a great chance! Plus, will another hospital want to hire and train you for their clerk position knowing that in a few months you're going to want to leave for an RN floor job? IMHO, I wouldn't go through the stress of switching jobs, taking a cut in pay - all during my last semester of school which is stressful enough - for something that's not even guaranteed.

Add me to the "Stay put" camp. With what you say about being so happy there I would absolutely stay there-- when they see your BSN is "in Progress" maybe they'll reassess.

Thanks so much, everyone. I think I'll just stay here for the time being. I do what I can with/for patients to help the nurses (including lifting, grabbing blankets, etc) & I really enjoy this atmosphere. Just wanted some perspective from experienced nurses!
