IV Soution Question

Published

What type of IV solution would be administered to a client brought to the ER following a MVA? Isotonic, Hypotonic, or Hypertonic? This question is making me crazy!!!

Thanks!

Assuming this patient is bleeding I would say isotonic to avoid fluid volume deficit. Hypertonic goes from blood vessels to cells but causes dangerous fluid shifts and is used less commonly. Hypo goes from cells to blood vessels and is more often used for edema & burns. So it all comes down to the major diagnosis.

see table of commonly used iv solutions.doc and an explanation about what hypotonic, isotonic and hypertonic iv fluids do in the body on post # 17 of this thread in nursing student assistant forum: https://allnurses.com/nursing-student-assistance/any-good-iv-127657.html - any good iv therapy or nursing procedure web sites
