IV Dosage Help!

Please help! I really can't figure this out. My book isn't giving me all of the steps nor can I find a video on YouTube :(

"The physician prescribed 250mg of an antibiotic in 30mL of D51/2 NS to infuse over 30 minutes, followed by a 15mL flush. The antibiotic requires 5mL of sterile water for reconstitution. The drop factor is 60gtt/mL. What is the rate in mL/hr at which the pump should be set?"

A. 60 mL/hr

B. 70 mL/hr

C. 80 mL/hr

D. 90 mL/hr

I figured 30 mL in 30 mins would be 60 mL in 1 hr! But it's telling me that's wrong.

And apparently 70 mL/hr is too. (if I used the 5mL of sterile water)

A friend in another nursing group gave me :

"45ml/30mins x 60gtts/ml=90 ml/hr"

and, while that works here, it's not working with the next problem.

Using the formula above:

65ml / 30 mins x 60gtt / 1ml = 130 ml/hr"

?!?!??! What.

As do I. Is this from the same program that you spoke of in your post of 23 February?

First, you have to be able to identify what you need to know, and what is there to distract you.

What you need to know: 30mL … to infuse over 30 minutes”, and followed be a 15 ml flush.” Medication flushes are typically administered at the same rate as the medication. This equals 45 mL to be infused over 45 minutes.

65ml / 30 mins x 60gtt / 1ml = 130 ml/hr"

50 mL to infuse over 30 minutes followed by 15 ml to infuse at the same rate.

You are being asked mL/hour, the drop factor is not necessary.

Thank you!!! I eventually did figure out that I was being confused by the extra info. :(

And yes, same program! Haha.

Thank you:)
