I posted this thread a few days ago, and thought that I might hear from somebody...but was saddened to see only a handful of lookers, and no response. I wrote about a program, a future nurses club, that my hospital is starting - to work with students in high school to introduce them to the nursing profession. It's kind of our way to address the nursing shortage, but on a more long-term approach. We're working with high schools in our county to form this hospital-run program in the schools, with nurses from the hospital volunteering their time to show students what nursing is all about, and to guide them into choosing courses that will prepare them for their nursing studies. It's all very organized, with officers, newsletters, visiting speakers, field trips, and shadowing. We've had good response from the schools, and a lot of interest shown by the students - and we're all very excited about this. Isn't there anyone out there doing anything like this, or having an opinion, or having seen this type of program? I ran this thread by my husband, and all he said was, "BORING!". Is it really? I thought it was a good topic. What do you think?

Sounds interesting to me. Sounds like a great program! :) Wish I had it when I was in HS. Are nurses really lining up to do it? Because you mentioned volunteer. I keep imagining the day when I am a nurse and I get to go to career day at my child's school and present on being a nurse.
PLease let us know how the program is going.
Oh yeah nurses are lining up alright! We currently have a "core" staff of around 25-30 nurses who are doing such "fun" things as designing the program writing the mission and vision statements, the bylaws, and setting up the officers (both within our core staff, and at the students level). Then we'll have groups of volunteers that will circulate throughout the county schools providing "inservices" of sorts - talks. We have any number of those nurses who are volunteering their time for short interval periods - just to go sometimes to do a talk, or provide a shadowing experience. The rest of us "core" people are committed for at minimum a year - because we are the people who will be the group adult leaders posted in each of the schools. We stay in "our" school for the year - so the students have that as a constant for them. The program in the school is to be run by the students with their own officers which they elect. We allow them to tell us to a degree what it is they need to know, or would like to do, or topics they would like covered. Who couldn't be excited about a program like this - to help the students out. Students have told us, and their guidance counselors too - there's just too few counselors, and they don't necessarily have all the info to steer the kids right....so we're going to them! Thanks for your reply...I will keep you posted.
Sounds like a great service to the community! Has anyone contacted the local Army Health Care Recruiting office to maybe get involved with the PR?

I don't know anything at all about Army Health Care Recruiting - how that would all tie in here. We're one hospital working with high school students to introduce nursing as a profession.....unless....do you mean to propose the Army as another option for nursing opportunities?
Exactly! IMHO, would be an excellent way to introduce the teenage males into nursing via the Army Nurse Corps. However, for the regular ANC a BSN is required & an ADN for reserves ANC.
Anyway, love what ya'll are doing and keep the great PR up!
No, this option (to be presented) hasn't been brought up. Thanks for the great idea. I'll bring it up at our next core meeting, and I'm SURE it will be something we will probably incorporate into a guest speaker type of presentation. Great, great, great info...thanks a million.

Wow, what a wonderful idea, OH. One of my former instructors and I were discussing a possibility of this very idea not long ago. Due to the already-existing nursing shortage, funding shortage at the CC level, co$t constraints at the BS level, addressing this as an attractive option at the high school level would work. In CA, we already have some HS who are training students to become CNA's. They also get some clinical experience at NH and Acute Care.
Corvette, tying this in with ANC/Reserves is also another great idea. Perhaps it could be implemented into the JROTC programs that already exist? I wanted to get into ANC as an "older" (ahem) AN Reserve, but I was a non-select. I WILL try again, though.
