Last week, Brookhaven Memorial Hospital in East Patchogue, NY laid off 80 LPN's with the notices timed to hit after the Memorial Day Weekend began! Is this happening nationwide? Are LPN's really second class nurses?

i'm an lpn/lvn, but i purposely choose to not view myself as a "second class nurse." only you can dictate the manner in which people treat you. if you don't tolerate disrespect, you are less likely to receive it on a regular basis.
in addition, hospital employment for lpns is on the decline in many areas across the us. however, employment in skilled nursing facilities and home health agencies is actually on the rise in many areas across the nation.
some people mistakenly assume that the nurse's only niche can be found within the realm of the acute care hospital. this is not true.

What a horrible thing to happen. But, I wonder if they (the LPNs) knew this was in the works. In most cases, when they lay off a title, there are usually union meetings (if the position is unionized) or something is in the wind to let people know that they are doing away with a title. I keep hearing that many hospitals and acute care situations are looking to hire RNs, and hospitals applying for Magnet Status are focusing moreso on BSNs in particular.
And, yes, do not consider yourself to be a second rate nurse. Thinking that way will decrease your confidence and it would show.
