Is nursing for me?

Hi!

I work as a caregiver in a nursing home. I have been doing this for about 4 months now. I am experiencing back and shoulder pain due to daily heaving lifting. I have just started my prereqs for the nursing program at my local community college. Is nursing going to be a right fit for me? I'm only 19 and I don't think I should be experiencing this discomfort already. Are there a lot of nursing jobs out there that are not as physical? If so let me know of some ideas! :)

Thank you

Makenzie

Hi!

Just about every RN and CNA has experienced some kind of back pain or injury. You are not alone. This includes myself.

Are you moving/lifting properly? It would be a good idea to take care of it now. Can you do some PT? Maybe go over proper body mechanics for lifting again just to make sure you are doing it right. Also, just be conscious of how you are lifting when you begin actually lifting something. If it's something you need help with, don't be afraid to ask for help. It's always a good idea to ask for help to prevent back injuries if you think you need it. Don't over do it.

There are many nursing jobs that do not require lifting, etc but these jobs are usually only avaliable after you have had a few years of bedside experience.

Definitely take a look at your body mechanics!
