investigation

lvn. was in RN school drug test came back positive for marijuana school dismissed me and I have a hospital job. the school said they would report me to the BON so with fear I found a wfh job non nursing related and just started. it's 8-5 am I work nights 7-7 but need to quit one soon.. I want to quit the hospital given all the stuff going on with school and idek what's gonna happen with the investigation. it was a one time incident I haven't self reported either because im at a loss for what to do. I don't want to work at the hospital but im scared if I stay then have my investigation say maybe fo TPAPN then how embarrassing and what if I cant give narcs or something just adding more work to other ppl. IDK what to do should I still self report what have you all done when getting reported for marijuana ?

Don't quit the hospital job and find a nursing job now, before an investigation is opened. If the school actually did report you (and they might not) it will be in your favor if you are already working in a nursing job because if you go on consent order and enter TPAPN, there's a good chance you keep that job if you have been there for a bit and they see a good work ethic. Find a nursing job in an outpatient setting that doesn't require passing of narcs. If you were to get a narc restriction later on, it doeent effect you.

You stated you are worried about you being "embarrassed." You should explore that further. Its part of the core reason as to why you diverted in the first place.

I didn't divert any narcs, im just wondering if I was in tpapn for thc positive test, what are the usual outcomes? will they restrict narc probably right.

Apologies on diverting. You clearly stated it was a positive test for weed and not Diversion.

What will likely happen? No way to tell 100 percent what will happen, but this is what is common and I will tell you what I would do. You do you.

First, what will likely happen? If the school reported you (and its possible they didn't) you will get a letter from the BON in no sooner than 5 months and maybe up to 18 months requesting you go for substance abuse eval or asking you about the event. Immediately get an attorney at that point. What would I do?

Stop smoking weed NOW and don't do any drugs and limit beers to 3 per week. Get a nursing job now! If you get contacted by the BON, get an attorney or get an attorney NOW. Deny ever smoking weed and I would say it was second hand exposure. Get a hair test for weed 3 months from now after you have stopped smoking weed. Give results to lawyer. Keep getting drug tests via hair every 3 months until you hear from the BON. Give results to lawyer. If the BON calls, your lawyer has 2 or 3 or 4 Negative Hair tests showing no drugs or weed over a long time. This has incredible weight! If the BON persists that you go for an SUD eval, you notify the SUD evaluator you have an attorney and that your attorney told you to give the SUD evaluator your drug tests-hair results.

The SUD evaluator quickly sees you have a substantial history of negative drug tests over a long period and will be less inclined to diagnose you with an SUD. This will likely get you out of the situation or at lest avoid a narc restriction and if you do get monitoring, it will not be a 5 year ordeal. It will be much shorter. What do I think would happen if all of the above is done? You get a letter of reprimand and thats it. What mattere most in all of this? Its critical to start building up a history of negative hair tests. I wouod also add a urinensrug screen for weed when I did the hair tests and if the BON contacts you in 12 or 15 months, you and your lawyer have 4 or 5 Negative Tests. This is powerful and greatly hurts the BONs ability yo do major damage and it hinders the ability of an SUD evaluator to falsely diagnose you with an SUD. It gives your lawyer great power. Their is no way the BON can prove it was not second hand exposure if more than 3 or 4 months go by. They can easily prove you smoked it yourself for the first 3 or 4 months, but after 6 months or a year, they can't. If the BON contacts you in 6 or 9 months or 12 months and you don't yet have 2 or 3 or 4 negative drug tests, you are going to be entered into 5 years of monitoring in TPAPN and likely will not have a narc restriction, but it is going to be very very difficult for you.

I'm still employed at the hospital but wondering if I should quit given all this stuff is happening and well IDK where it's all heading. I would hate to continue working and then let's say im in tpapn and the cm says oh you can't work there or oh you have narc restrictions.

I don't think you quite understand. I don't think you realize the difficulty with getting a job once you are on probation and under investigation and enrolled in TPAPN.. You don't simply get a job. Many nurses try for 2 years to find a job and can't get hired. Additionally, part of TPAPN requirements are that you work as a nurse. I will repeat, get a job NOW in nursing. Build a good work ethic and record and work hard and if the BON calls in 6 months or 1 year and you are forced to enter TPAPN, you are far more likely to KEEP that job even though you will have some embarrassment explaining what happened. That embarrassment FAR OUTWEIGHS the stress of you not being able to find a job in nursing. To graduate and comply with TPAPN, you have to be employed as a nurse while in monitoring. A non Nursing position does not count.

As for you "waiting to see where all of this leads to and what happens," those words have been used countless times by nurses in your situation on this forum over the last 15 years. ALL OF THEM live to regret it. The ones that take action NOW are the ones who do well. What action do I recommend. You do do. Here's what I would do for the 2nd time.

1. Hire a lawyer now.

2. Find a nursing job in an outpatient setting like a clinic where narcs aren't given or narcs are limited. Work that job. Work hard. Build a relationship with your boss.

3. Stop all drugs NOW including THC.

4. Get a hair drug test and urine test in 3 months and repeat this every 3 months and give results to attorney.

5. If the BON writes or calls in 6, 9, or 12 months or possibly 18 months, you already have a laundry list of negative drug tests and an attorney. YOU WILL WIN.

The opposite approach? Go ahead and "wait to figure it out or for it to clear up or to see where it goes" and don't get a job in nursing, drive yourself crazy for 18 months waiting for a letter in the mail, don't need any drug tests every 3 months, and you go ahead  and watch what will happen. Your life is about to become imaginably difficult. What could have been a 1 year at most monitoring program or a simple letter of reprimand turns into 5 years of monitoring, you being forced to get a job on nursing to comply with monitoring standards, but nobody will hire you, your in debt up to your knees, and you face monitoring costs and drug tests and program fees totally up to 800 per month and this process lasts for one-half of a decade.

You have 2 choices. You do you. Hint.....as a nurse who has worked with hundreds of nurses in your situation over 2 decades. Go ahead and "let it play out or wait" and you will watch your life quickly spiral. You do you. Choose wisely. You came here asking for advice and truth and what is probable or likely yo happen. You have been given those answers and you have been gifted how to overcome them if you choose.

Stop it with the "embarrassment eith yoir boss" and having to explain weed. NOBODY gives a ***. Employers have seen it all. What matters is....youbhave worked your butt off with that employer for 6 or 9 months and they like you. That means you keep that job IF....IF...the BON comes calling.

I'd just find another career choice. Nursing has become a low paying *** show.

PLEASE follow the advice given by @Regalnurse Any embarrassment you suffer regarding your boss is only on you -your boss really will not care about these details. "Their" primary concern is having an employee they can count on.

Yours is staying employed in the field you chose. The advice I've seen this nurse provide (twice, now) is solid and can save you a LOT of headache down the road. You really should follow it. Whatever you did (pot) is done, now you need to step forward to the future -your next actions until you get notified by the BON are what will determine your future. @Regal 's advice is solid, do it and move forward. You will save yourself a lot of stress later.

Regalnurse is spot on.
if you want to stay in nurse, follow his/ her advice exactly

Nothing is guaranteed, but this is your best chance

I wish you well   Don't let this situation define you.
