Interviewing at LTC

Published

Hey all! Quick question - I will be interviewing for a position at an LTC and this will be my first job as a CNA. I plan on working as a CNA to get through nursing school. I hear that most LTCs need lots of CNAs and it seems that in my area, all the LTCs are always looking for CNAs. So do I tell them that I will be going back to school for nursing? Will that hurt my chances of getting the job since I don't plan on being a CNA forever? Or is it a good thing to tell them that I am on the path to become an RN?

I would think that for a hospital poistion, they would love to hear that because they will have a new nurse when I'm done with school - but LTCs need CNAs, not nurses. What do you all think?

Specializes in LTC.

Telling them you're a nursing student shouldn't hurt your chances at all. If they're hard up for CNAs they're not going to pass you up just because they know you'll be leaving in a few YEARS. CNA turnover is usually much quicker than that and telling them you're a nursing student will show them that you're doing it because you want to.

Holly,

I don't think it would hurt your chances, because there are a lot of LTC's that will actually help you pay for your schooling. A least that is what I have been told at the places I have talked to. Most though do want you to sign on then to work for them for 3 years or so or less, depending....And I have also seen where they do need nurses, too! I wish you the best of luck on your interview.

I think it can only help by showing how dedicated you are to the field. I have orientation tomm and they were thrilled to know that I wanted to go on with my schooling.

Thank you all for your insight - makes me feel a lot better about my interview!

At our community, it would be a bonus to say so up front. You would be a more valueable employee. I have helped interview and I tell you I'd rather recommend to hire an ambitious student than a washed out person. A little more fire and ambition is a very valueable job asset.
