Okay first I need just some basic background information, like how long have you been a nurse, what department do you work in now, and maybe an area you desire to work in.

1. How do you see the roles and responsibilities of the registered nurse changing in practice?

2. Please describe one example of an ethical dilemma you have faced in practice.

3. How do you maintain your practice expertise?

4. How do you deal with conflicts with members of the healthcare team? (other nurses, physicians, etc.)

5. What motivates and rewards you in your career?

okay first i need just some basic background information, like how long have you been a nurse, what department do you work in now, and maybe an area you desire to work in.
an lpn for 10 years and an rn for 6yrs, presently in an acute rehab hospital, would like to do ltac or icu
1. how do you see the roles and responsibilities of the registered nurse changing in practice?
since technology is advancing, the role of the rn is too. we are increasing our knowledge base and have more and more evidence based info to go on, therefore more to know.
2. please describe one example of an ethical dilemma you have faced in practice.
not so much a true dilemma but just a feeling that i am not doing the right thing for my pt even though it is what the dr ordered and very common practice... when i used to work in a pedi clinic, we would be throwing heavy doses of meds at kids with adhd and other neuro/psych issues when what they really needed was for their parents to get counseling and stop being so dysfunctional. many kids just needed a "parentectomy" and they would be fine, but rather than tell the parents they were doing something wrong, we would just drug the child to control their behavior.
3. how do you maintain your practice expertise?
i got certified in my field--crrn. ceus, etc
4. how do you deal with conflicts with members of the healthcare team? (other nurses, physicians, etc.)
usually we are on the same page and work well together. can"t think of any major conflict other than unrealistic expectations put upon us by management. this is a widespread problem in nursing and basically we just suck it up and deal with it.
5. what motivates and rewards you in your career?

when i see a pt come in unable to even sit up, with a trach and a gtube and then by the time we are done with them they are walking, eating, talking etc. even less dramatic improvements make you feel good, but those are the ones i like the best--our success stories.
