Interview at nyp- please help

Published

Hi Everyone,

I have an interview with NYP for a new grad position next week and I'm very nervous. I would really appreciate it if someone can give a general idea about their interview process?

Where did the interview take please and how many people interviewed you?

How long was the interview?

What type of questions were you asked?

What unit did you interview for and did you get the job?

Thanks!

What unit did u apply and where (cornell or columbia)?

Try not to act giddy. They already know you are a new grad. Lead them to believe that you intend to work with them for a very long time. Not just grab some experience then leave. Let them know that you are aware that things are not the same as when you had your clinical instructor holding your hand. But that you are prepared because you want to make an impact in this honorable profession. Sometimes they hire you on the spot, I was.

It would'nt hurt either to brush up on care plans for major diseases (to know what the focus of care is for a particular disease). Also Know how to insure patient safety, eg keeping siderails up, call bell within easy reach etc for a patient at risk for falling. You might be given a scenario in which you have to say what you will do.

Usually its the unit manager who interviews you, or it might be the assistant nurse manager, sometimes even the assistant director of nursing. Or all three together.

As a new grad you will be given an extensive orientation. Because they know that you've only had school experience. Thus you are a liability for them, as all new nurses are. You might be asked to tell what is your most lacking area. To be on the safe side say something like delegating to unlicensed ancillary staff eg patient care technicians. Thats normal, its something that gets better over time, just as most things in nursing do.

Good Luck!!!

Hi noni06,

this has nothing to do with your question, but can i ask when you graduated from nursing school? and how you applied for a position at NYP? did you do it online? or did you send in your resume & cover letter directly to human resources?

sorry for so many questions!

Thank you Bklyn RN.

If you don't mind me asking, were you interviewed just once and how long did you have to wait to find out that you were hired?

Hey Chris,

I graduated this past december and I applied online.

Good luck!

I also applied there as a new grad but only yesterday! :)

How soon did they respond to you? Which unit did you choose?

I hope it goes well for you - interviews can be so nerve-wracking! Again, good luck!!!!!!!

Hi MrsGPR,

I was looking at their website and noticed that all their current job postings are for nurses with experience. Can I ask how you applied as a new grad?

Thank you Noni! Good luck on your interview!

Chris,

I just filled out the application for a general position. I figured it couldn't hurt.

I'll keep you posted - HA!!

Good luck!

MrsGPR,

Best of luck to you! And please do keep me posted! :)

I was interviewed once, also I was offered the position at the end of the interview. Usually, by the time they call you for an interview they've already gone online to check your license. And they know that nurses usually are considering other options, even new grads. So as not to loose you to another facility, it is not uncommon to offer you the position at the interview. I have found interviews in our profession less rigid than other interviews I've had prior to becomming a nurse.

I have since left NYP.
