interview mess up?

Published

Ok guys, I think I messed up again. You see I got a call for an interview on my answering mach. last week. It was for a gov. job at large nursing and assisted living home and is supposed to pay well from what I hear. I like my present job at a local assisted living center, but the pay is'nt that good and there are hardly any benefits (no time off, insurance, ect.) and I can't pay my bills without working my prn job at least 2-3 days a month too. Anyway, I have yet to talk to the lady as every time I call she does'nt answer. I work 3rd shift so I usually sleep from about 7a-3:30p or so. I tried calling several times after 3p and she doesn't answer, so I stayed up a little later and called around 8a, still no answer. I finally left a message earlier in the week wondering if the interview was still available. She called back and left a message that it was, but we should do the interview sometime by the end of the week. I got up a little early yesterday (a little before 3) and she did'nt answer, so I left a message again stating that I worked the night shift and keep missing her. I had planned on getting up early today, but overslept again so I'm thinking its probably too late. I have to work tomorrow so I'm not sure what to do. I'm thinking I probably should have set my alarm for around noon to get up and call. It's been a good 10 days since she first called now.

I most likely was a little hesitant about calling her back as the job is about a 2 hour drive away and I know that is impractical so I would have to put my house on the market to try to sell fast. I know I would probably take a loss on it in its current condition as it needs some work to look sell-able and I don't have cash to do it right now. Then I would have to find a place in the area I know nothing about, but it does seem to be a decent area with lots of entertainment, ect. I don't know, it just seems like this would be my only way to start paying all my bills and start getting out of debt, but not without difficulty in a big change by moving. I do kind of have a back up plan I've been mulling over-going back to school by taking distance classes and hopefully getting my RN. But that will take a good 1.5 to 2 years and I hate to borrow more money and there is no guarantee I will pass. I'm not sure what I should do now? I'm so mad at myself for being indecisive. Think its too late to call her again? I mean it is a big place and they probably have openings periodically, but I may have already left a bad impression by not getting a hold of her some way. What do you guys think I should do?

You, clearly, have tried to contact this woman. The fact that you are playing phone tag with her is not a "mess up" by any means. Be persistant. Keep trying to reach her until you get a satisfactory answer-whether the opening is still available or not. Make sure you weigh all of your options though. You don't want to sell your house with the "prospect" of a job that is 2 hours away. Would a move at this time be a good thing? ONly you can decide. If you can pay your bills with working your prn job a few times a month, would the cost of moving being financially beneficial?

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Well I guess I have'nt considered the actual cost of moving, just the long-term benefit of making more money and hoping I can find a cheaper place to live in the process possibly. Its probably too late now as she said something about wanting to interview by the end of the week and its now the weekend. I thought about calling and leaving a message like "I would be available at 3p on Monday to interview, call and leave a message if that will work or suggest another time", but that won't work for next week as I have to work Tues. thru Thurs. next week and I'm picking up Mon. night at my other job, so my first available day would be next Friday and thats a good week after she wanted to interview and about three weeks since she first called...

Probably a stupid question, but do you guys think I should re-apply for the job as it looks like it is still on the gov. web site or forget about it?

I had a similar situation. Not for an interview but trying to get in touch with the HR person is like pulling eye teeth. so after, i think 10 phone calls with my name and number I gave up. Looked for other jobs. I would probably keep trying if you really want the job though. Good Luck!
