intake and output question!

Published

I'm stuck on this question which goes...

At 0700, the nurse started an IV of 1L LR and set the infusion pump at 83ml/hr. The patient was started on famotidine 20mg IVPB in 50mL NS at 0800 and 2000. For breakfast, he took 1 cup of coffee and 6oz cream. He took 6oz of ice chips and voided 425ml. Calculate I & O from 0700 to 1500.

And here is my calculation.

Intake

83ml/hr x 8=664ml

+ 50ml of famotidine

+ 1cup=240ml

+ 6oz=180ml

+ 6oz ice=180ml

Total intake 1314ml

Output= 425ml

However, the answer says the intake is 1224ml and output is 425ml. Where am I making a mistake?

Does six ounces of ice chips by weight melt down to 180cc's??? I'll bet it melts down to 90cc's

Remember to always record ice chips as half of their volume ;)
