Specializes in med-surg.

I just had a debate that I am trying to solve within myself. I have been working on a med-surg floor for 6 months now. Today I just put in for a transfer to the L&D unit. L&D is what I love, it's what I went to nursing school for. I am just confused because I don't know whether or not I should go for L&D or stay with med-surg. I don't want to hurt my manager's feelings. I really enjoy the people that I work with, but I am just not happy on the floor. I want to try my hand at L&D. What should I do? Thanks.

As a former nurse manager, let me assure you that you "owe" your manager nothing more than your very best effort and utmost professionalism. Do not feel obligated to remain on a unit which does not interest you for the manager's sake. If you have been a good employee, she will most definitely miss you, but will wish you well.

If you are not happy in m/s, leave. You've done six months that's long enough to be unhappy.

Specializes in CRNA.

It sounds like you have already solved the dilemma yourself. If the land of dilated cervixes makes you happy, then you should do it. Don't look back. there are plenty of nurses willing to take your spot in a medical/surgical unit.

Specializes in Adult Stem Cell/Oncology.

This isn't about hurting someone's feelings, it's about doing what you need to do to be happy! :heartbeat If your heart tells you that you belong in L&D, go for it! I'm sure your manager will understand! Good luck!

Specializes in Rural Health.

I struggled horribly with going to OB and leaving a really good ER job. I had great coworkers, an awesome schedule and a wonderful manager but my heart was in OB. My manager was awesome about it. She was upset because she lost me as a nurse but was THRILLED I was seeking and fulfilling my dream job.
