Immigrating to calgary with an 18 & 14 year old children

Published

Hi I have started my application to work as a nurse in calgary, alberta. I already have my LMO certificate but still having doubts if it will be a good move for my family. My other half has done his medical exam for visa processing (also a UK nurse). My daughters are 18 & 14. Wondering if school transfer arrangement will be complicated and expensive? Eldest daughter will be in her 2nd year College (Accounting & Business )in Sept & the little one is currently in year 9. Any thoughts please?

I'm at the same stage, as you know! The 14 & 9 year olds won't be a problem - just make sure you check out the Fraser Institutes school tables before you pick a house! Schools are allocated in districts & there are major variations. Feel free to PM me as I'm literally on the computer right now because that's what i've been doing pretty much all day today!!

Your younger ones will only need to pay the same fees that other Calgary children do (which vary from school to school & are for transport, lunchtime supervision, materials etc.) Check out this website http://www.cbe.ab.ca/ for further information. Also check out www.britishexpats.com there's tons of stuff on the "Wiki." My thanks to Silver Dragon for giving me the latter link some time ago.

I think you can also find out what to do for the older one too from the above sites. Bear in mind that if you're going out on a temporary work permit the 18 year old will only be able to attend school & not work as she is only entitled to a study permit.

Hi Rebecca

Still no news ...its already Day 29 since med was done. How about yours?

Cheers

Give them a call - they say that you can. Personally I'll be calling them on a daily basis once my time's up!! :-D They'll send me mine quickly to shut me up!

You have to count from when you know they received the medical report & you can only count working days but I have to say my DH & I have both been expecting you to hear early this week on those calculations - so call them & find out - we also want to know ;-)

I had a chat to the international recruiter from Calgary Health yesterday - there's an induction day that I'm hoping to be on the 15th September (there are ones before & after but that date sounded good to me!) maybe I'll see you there!

I'm sitting CRNE 08 Oct so back to my studying now - on top of organising leaving parties, shipping, house sale etc etc STRESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS doesn't even go close!

Hi

I am just trying to sell my house before moving to Calgary to work in cardiology areas. You said you are taking the CRNE in Oct, I was wondering whether to take the exam asap., or get some experience of Canadian nursing first, this is because I have been nursing for 20+years & over half in cardiology alone, so am I likely to pass (ie. not up to date on surgery, maternity, children etc) What do you think?

Work through a Canadian prep book 1st (you can get Mosby from Amazon.ca) that will give you the best guide as to where you need more knowledge. You can then take the CNA readiness test online, if you do well on Mosby. I will be getting hold of the CNA book itself once on my vacation in Florida because the international (outside Canada & USA) postage is extortionate from their site at the moment ($188!!!!) I know it's a glitch but they won't answer my emails about it.

If you find you're really lacking then I honestly think that the Springhouse N-CLEX review book is brilliant for brushing up on knowledge. I'm NOT talking about the question & answer book (the CRNE has a different slant to N-CLEX) but the actual guide. I like the way they detail out the conditions & basic things to look out for. I don't know of a Canadian book that does the same & can be got easily from abroad - but I'd happily stand corrected.

My gut feeling is that you will need to work for a bit first but be aware that if you only want to do "multiple guess" questions you need to sit by next year - before/in case they bring back the short answer questions.

The reason I'm sitting so early is that I did N-CLEX recently & a lot of my all round basic knowledge is still there so I just need to concentrate on learning how to answer questions with a Canadian slant! :-)

Hi Rebecca

I didnt call them as I was working only off today. I was 3 people getting theirs on the www.britishexpats.com. The thread is: TWP any good news? They got theirs on Thursday 10th July.

I am also a bit hesitant to call or email them as they mention that an inquiry may lead to delay the application. I just wait as I am told.

I wish i had better news.

Take care

Ibrahim
