I want to compare notes on Overseas Travel

am interested in your travel to the virgin islands and what company contracted you to go there? appreciate any info you can provide, thanks....

I have been researching travel in many overseas places, including New Zealand, Australia, Qatar, Dubai/UAE, Saudi, the UK, and so on. I have worked only in the US Virgin Islands, but am contemplating overseas work. I have contacts for these jobs, but no info on what they might actually be like. Any info or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

A number of companies staff the USVI. I went to St. Croix with American mobile. I know Cross Country also staffs there. St. Thomas postings can always be found on Delphi, usually with Abetta care.

Recently returned from work in the VI.....can tell you a local company down there to go with who seemed the best to me.......would never go there to work again but would go to visit the islands.

Why wouldn't I return to the VI to work?? I had just finished a year assignment in Hawaii and was expecting more of the VI than it had to offer. The island wasn't bad but I didn't like the job. They have limited supplies....no fitted sheets, no beds in ICU that work on electricity you have to use the foot pump on all of them....no soap/toothbrush/toothpaste for patients, no manufactured restraints (you make them with kerlix)....and on and on it goes. Nothing filed in an organized manner....just folders of papers laying around at the nurses station. Pharmacy only comes to the floor ONCE per day....any med orders rcvd outside their visit time....you have to go downstairs (and the air-conditioning does't work down there and it's 90+ heat and about the same humidity) to get the med. Physical therapy never works with pt's....you will get an order for it (MD CYA) but they will never show. Local staff NEVER comes to work on time....I'm sorry but they say that's a cultural thing (layed back culture and all).....but I call that common courtesy as a professional. NO communication between departments....lots of workers in the lab do not speak english and it's impossible to try and work out a problem with them....you just have to drop the issue....you might as well hit your head against a wall. No office supplies at the desk....no pens, no tape etc...they actually took up a collection one day from the workers for office supplies....I refused to give any money and asked "who supplies the CEO with his pens/tape/staples etc. I seriously doubt he brings them in from his home. And if you try and make an improvement....like one time I asked for them to get a file cabinet so I could organize all the loose paperwork into that file system now as A-Z....but was just told we couldn't afford one and beside "we have always done it this way" But now......after being home from there for almost a year....there are so many things I miss about the island......it's hard to explain......I love the fact that there's nothing to do there but snorkel....dive....enjoy the beaches with almost nobody else on them.....drive on only 2 land roads.....and just kickin back in the hammock. It was an incredible experience that I wouldn't trade.....I'm just a little to much of a perfectionist do be happy working down there.

I am a nurse working in Toronto, Canada and I am doing my research for working overseas also. My area of interest is in mental health and addictions or community outreach & I have been looking into New Zealand, Dubai and Cayman Islands. You said that you have connections regarding some of those countries and I was wondering if you would be able to share the contacts because I NEED a change badly. I don't have info to share regarding working overseas as a nurse, but I have friends who went overseas to work in New Zealand and Dubai (different profession) and they got good reviews. Apparently they are multi-cultural, friendly and modern countries. Lots to do and see (I am not sure what you are interested in), but I do not think you would have a problem releasing some of your stress from work because it has a lot to offer and explore. If there are specific questions regarding the country (not nursing) I could find out more. Good luck with your search.
