I.V. Certification Question

Published

hey everyone, I was looking into taking an I.V. certification class but no where does it specify how long the certificate is good for. Does this vary state to state or is it a national certification. All answers are appreciated thanks :)

I am not aware of any national certifications. The way I understand it is that the certification is awarded by your employer after you have completed approved training and competencies. I teach it to area LVN's but explain that I cannot "certify" them. They come to my class for the education portion, and I supply a sample competency form, but it is up to their own employer to determine if that combination is sufficient for the individual to be recognized as someone who can administer IV medications safely. Have you talked to any of the nursing schools in your area?

In my area, its like you describe, as is phlebotomy. If you take phlebotomy, you get the education portion but you are not actually certified until you find employment and become certified by the employer.

The certification is indefinite in my state. People usually will retake a course only if they want a refresher due to not practicing skills in their jobs; but once you have the certfication on your license, you are not required to recertify. You might want to pose this question with your Board or at the course when you attend.
