I have a question or two?

I really want to be a nurse in the NICU. My family tells me it will be hard and I wont like it, but I know I will. I would like to know what schooling is needed? How do I make the NICU my specalty? What it is like to work in the NICU?

Thanks

Hello, FarmerGirl,

If you want to be in the NICU, you have chosen a very challenging and rewarding career.

I suggest that you get your RN, Then, you can work in pediatrics, nursery and then NICU (actually.....anywhwwere). Some nurses are hired in the NICU after graduation, but, usually experience is required before this happens.

I do not understand why our families tell us we will not like something. I know some are trying to look after our well-being, but, when it comes to making our own decisions, YOU are the only one who can do that.

Check out the many threads on the subject of NICU here at Allnurses and you can get a better idea what goes on in this great area.

Good luck!!

Most NICU's take new grads...where I work we find it easier to orient a new grad than someone that has worked somewhere else. :wink2:

Look into the nursing programs around you, pick which one most meets your needs
