how do I know which one to get???

HI All,

I'm new to nursing and need to get a stethescope for clinicals and practice.. I have done some research but I still have no clue which stethescope to get... How do you know if one is good, which is better ect... I have read several posts and it seems people really like the littmans (but they are SO expensive). My friend who is a nurse says that while the Littmas are the best a prestige is a close second- but there are so many varieties... My budget really is tight and I just don't know how to pick which one is right for me.

thanks for the help

Hi,

I'm in my second semester of nursing school and I have several steths that I like to rotate between for labs and clinicals. I find that I really like the Prestige Clinical I (I have the stealth finish) has been really good to me. It's comfortable, fairly lightweight and allows me to hear all the stuff I need to hear. I also have a Littmann Class II S.E. that I like (cardiac sounds are nice and loud) but you're right - it is expensive, and the doctors at our hospital often borrow a steth and forget to return it (not on purpose - they aren't thieves; it just happens). I also have a Prestige Sprague-style that is a bit heavier than the Clincial I or Littmann, but it works fine. It's a bit quieter than the others, but it is certainly useable and you cannot beat it in terms of extra attachments it came with (the Clinical I came with an extra diaphragm and eartips which is nice).

Hope this helps. If you can, try various types on at a scrub shop. SOme steths fit some people better than others (I have a professor that swears by her Prestige Sprague while others don't like the way it fits in their ears). Everybody is different.

Good luck!

Actually I found that Kila Lab stethoscope are a real close second to the littman cardiology III and for 29 dollars. I just bought one this month and I like it but everyone ears are different. I got mine on Ebay from stethoscope r us. Just my 2 cents.
