what if I hate this traveling? What if i cancel my assignment for no other reason except that I want to go home? (Not that I want to, I just want to know.)

Lots of financial penalties.

If you hate traveling when you get to your assignment, you simply remind yourself that it IS only temporary - 13 weeks, and you can go home when it's done. If you are really worried about this, look for your first assignment within about 100 - 150 miles from your home, so that if you get homesick, you can easily go home for a few days when you have 3-4 off in a row.
If you cancel an assignment "for no other reason except that I want to go home", you are breaking your side of a professional agreement. When you signed, you said "I will fill this position for X number of weeks". Your company will be well within it's rights and the terms of your contract (read it carefully) to charge you for all the costs incurred for apartment, furniture rentals, utilities and possibly any penalties paid to the hospital for a broken contract for the remaining period of the contract. You will also have blown your reputation with that company and probably not want to use them as a reference.
Don't mean to sound harsh, but this is reality and it's better to understand what you are agreeing to beforehand. Traveling can be a great lifestyle, but it's not for everyone - only you can know how you react to new places and situations.

Haven't you ever been in a situation where you just didn't like it? What did you do then? If you're afraid of change or new situations, stay way away from travelling 'cause you'll live in a constant state of change. But if you like people, new places and learning, it's a great life style. Fair warning though, if you break contract, expect to take a financial hammering from your company. The companies have to commit to a housing contract and I expect there's a broken contract penalty to them from the hospital too.

Are all these penalties listed in the contract or is it stuff that they make up along the way?

I don't get housing and all that stuff but i get a stipend at the end of each 4 weeks. This company that I'm working for is really not paid anything out for me except a drug screen and a tetorifice shot. I don't even get benefits for the first 4 weeks. What are they really out?
