I am freaking out- US RN to start working in Oz

Hi everyone!

ive moved to Oz to be with my partner and after a long time of waiting for AHPRA to finally register me, it’s happened!! Yay! And I got an agency job- so things are looking up.

But I am so nervous to start working. I have never paper charted in my life, mixed/calculated medications, I’m used to a Pyxis machine (for meds), and everything seems very-different- than back home.

Any advice/tips on organizing/managing would be welcomed!

It seems because the computerized nursing has been taken away from me- I’m dumbfounded ??

Hi! I am also moving in Australia in June, Sydney to be exact. Where are you moving?

I am a US nurse with 5-years of surgical/trauma ICU nursing experience in a level-1 trauma center in Detroit. I, too would appreciate any advices, tips and suggestions on how to acclimate to a whole new different healthcare system =)

Thank you in advance!

Hey! I am actually living in Perth, WA- so waaayyyy on the other side of the country. I worked 3 years on a Medsurg floor in Chicago area previously. ?

Well if you get sent to FSH in Perth they use Pyxis for meds - otherwise its really not that complicated - they're in the cupboard in alphabetical order and you just pick them out manually.
Again - paper charting, it may be less technology-based than what you are used to but it isn't that complicated - the paperwork is pretty self-explanatory/tells you how to fill it out - the biggest thing is follow the esculation criteria on the obs/vital sign charts.
And don't be scared to ask for help - let people know you're new ?
Ask your agency if you can do some buddy shifts to help you get a handle on the differences ?
