I do declare

Published

When the CPNE journals were posted on EC's website, I noticed many people posting about declaring ____ (can't remember the terminology used). It seemed like you could "declare ___" whenever you want to skip something. I'm sure there are rules attached and specific circumstances identified for when this is allowable. What's the terminology and what exactly is that all about? I couldn't find anything about it anywhere else.

clinical decision making. it's on pg 119 of the 18th ed. study guide.

Thanks. I'm not preparing for CPNE yet but in between studies I begin obsessing/panicking over it so had to know what this was about.

Clinical Decision Making or CDM. this is used when you may cause physical or emotional jeopardy which is a no no. But if you use this and the CE finds it was unwarrented you could fail your PCS. Example, when journals were available, I read one in which the SN could not get the apical pulse due to the patient's breast being "pendulous" she felt it would cause emotional jeopardy. Another example, you are about to ambulate a patient when they stand they state I feel dizzy I do not wish to walk at this time. You declare CDM...you get it? The more you read your study guide the more clear it becomes. Good luck to you
