12 hr shift too much/different position

Published

Hi all

I just began working as tech at hospital/12 hr nites/pt and I feel it is too much. I don't get tired as much as my poor aching feet. I have good shoes but I found out I need ortho shoes which i can't afford. I am on my feet most of those hrs. I just found out that the hospital will not let new employees transfer to other floors for at least 6 months and my current floor only offers 12 hrs and no other positions such as US ( which i orig worked as).

Good news. I found out today I got a 92 out of 100 0n National Cert. test for Medical Assistants and passed with flying covers but this really does not help me at hospital. I thought about working at dr office but I would not be able to take nursing classes once i am in program.

Thanks

Wow!! I don't know the standard pt ratio for techs, but that sure sounds like a lot to me!!

As for the 12-hour shifts, I know I startd wroking those as an intern this summer and my feet, knees and hips were just killing me by the end of a shift (I'm a year older than you)....I ended up switching my shoes around...sometimes Danskos, sometimes tennies....but after 6 weeks, I didn't really get used to the hours....12 hours is a LONG day, with little time in between having to get back for the next shift....where I have been working, they offer 8 hour shifts....can you switch to that if you'd prefer it?!?!?

You can see if the hospital offers 8 hour shifts, I think most do.

As for the patient ratio, that's probably pretty normal for a tech at a hospital I THINK. You wouldn't wanna do LTC though, I had 20 patients, now that was a killer. lol
