How has your perception of nursing changed?

Published

hi! i am a junior i b.s.n. student and this wednesday is my first week of clinicals. i am excited. it is not my first time in a hospital, i currently work in a rehabilitation hospital and used to work as an e.r. tech.

i am wondering, has your prespective of nursing/nurses changed since your first semester of school? is nursing different that you thought it would be when you first started? your responses are appreciated, i am doing some research for a nursing experience class!

well I will say when I was a tech while in nsg school I had a lot of respect for nurses and the way they could take care of patients and essentially save lives. I, as the tech always thought that I was stressed b/c I had so many tasks to do. I was physically worn out at the end of the shift....from just tasking

now...as the nurse... I see the license as priceless...my job....my security and every patient I take care of I am constantly mentally stressed that I checked the med correctly...I gave it correctly..not too fast, with something pharm said was compatible...watch the vital signs for any change..etc. Not to mention chart every single thing I do... and in the end I want to leave my shift feeling that I made a positive influence on the patient and did the best to my ability to take CARE of my assignment....and hope nothing I did or didn't do left a loop hole that means I could be involved in a lawsuit.

~ My two cents~maybe it'll help~:)

my perception has changed a bit only in that i am not as idealistic as i first was. Most of the nurses that i have shadowed seemed to be a bit jaded about their patients and definitely don't spend as much time with them as i think they should.

I never realised how much science knowledge nurses have to have. I always imagined it as an easy job...how i was wrong!!
