How long did it take?

How long did it take to get use to/comfortable doing your job? My first day was today at a hospital..and I dont know how I feel about it. How long did you get to train before getting thrown to the wolves lol?

2 weeks, I think. I did orientation on nights and that was smart of the ASDON, imo.

It's easier to break in a newb CNA this way...

Anyway - I was unlicensed when I got the job...so, it took that long for me to test. The day after I took my test - they were, like, "So...you ready to start days?"

*laugh*

Two full weeks? They have me on four days this week, but my schedule may not be like that all the time, might go down after training. Not sure how long though training lasts. I didnt get my pre na orientation yet, we do the 7th and 8th. It seems like you need like months to even get the hang of it lol. Just probably seems so overwhelming to me since Im new.

I trained a 4 days in skilled, 2 days in assisted, and 2 days in the other assisted facility. Then they through me out on the floor. It takes awhile to get comfortable. I've been there about a month and a half and I'm still not comfortable. Once you get to know the residents you'll feel a lot better. And this was some advice my trainer gave me: Once you get into YOUR routine you will feel much better. Don't try to just copy what someone else is doing. Create your own routine and you'll feel MUCH more comfortable!

Thanks. Well since it is at a hospital..its kind of hard to remember people if you can get new patients every day. The charting system is confusing...and I cant seem to remember who is who, and what we did and when. I really hope I get the hang of it. My one trainer said next time Im in charge of half the patients, and I really dont think Im ready at all! We do so much I cant remember what your supossed to do and when. Wish me luck! It doent help that we didnt get our na orientaion ahead of time..but we get it this upcoming tues/wed. Im new to being a na also...no training ever! I went to school for something else in the medical field.

I had three days of training and then "You're on your own". :)

Do you have a CNA report sheet? Something that you write down who is on bathroom privileges, who had their linens changed, vitals, etc.? I find that to be an invaluable tool, and it helps me to give report or chart. :)

Congrats on your new job!

Thanks. I am really not familiar with anything...we have a sheet that you can write down vitals (not sure what else is on there). I am having a hard time remembering EVERYTHING! I have a LONG week ahead of me to :( Its hard because I have no na experience at all (no classes etc.) Im confused with the input thing to...the chart is not so helpful. I forgot to see if Im with my regular preceptor tomorrow (she wants me to go on my own and take care of half the patients! I really dont feel like Im ready..so we will see what happens. Also the manual blood pressure cuff/stethoscope their stinks..cant hear really. (everyone shares them=germs). I have my own stethoscope, but dont think it would be a good idea caring around all day (I have no locker..which also really stinks).
