How long did it take to settle within workplace in USA?

Hey all

Just wondering how long it took people to settle down within the workplace (not life in general) and know exactly what they were doing etc. Seems to be a big jump from going what I do to what I will be expected to do when I am in USA etc. Such as using a stethoscope, ordering tests, starting iv's, not having any house officers to pass on things to and having to call Consulatant at home if somethings wrong etc. And do you still get to do dressings etc or do LPNS end up doing all of that?

Excited but scared I am not going to be good enough.

Well for me I have only just settled down and I have been here 11 months almost...BUT I am on my 2nd job now:wink2:

It took me a couple of weeks to get used to using my stethoscope and listening to lung sounds - does take a while to understand differnet sounds but always ask someone else if you arent sure. Starting IV's well....I have only needed to start 1/2 a dozen but then I am not on a med/surg unit and dont always need to do them on the Ortho unit.

I still do dressing on my unit - I am expected to do about 3 if I can before I go home - dont always get time to do that many and some nights I can do them all....just depends....

Took me a while to get settled becasue I swapped jobs half way through.....

YOU WILL BE GOOD ENOUGH>>>>just tell them straight what you can or cant do and ask for more orientation from them....if you arent comfortabel say so - otherwise it wont help you at all.

Thank you for the reply. Hopefully wont take too long to settle. Havent got a job yet, but have said only Nevada as fiance has job there and is moving in 2 weeks!

I am sure once you get started you will be fine - the hardest step is getting there and starting:wink2:

I listen to breath sounds here any excuse I get, just to try & get in some practice! Patients on PCA & those with COPD are my usual targets!
