I love to hire new grads but I'm getting weary of having to repeat myself. I have one new grad who has been with us since the end of June. He and I started at this place the same day. He has yet to pick up speed with med pass which is OKAY, but he still asks how to transcribe an order , how to order labs, how to fill out the Coumadin sheet and he somehow gets out of every admission assessment. Am I asking too much to think he should have learned these things by now? I have shown him at least 5 times how to transcribe orders and he was mentored by one of my best nurses/teachers. What do I do?

If you think his substandard performance adversely impacts patient safety, start the paper trail for termination. Hire his replacement in the meantime so that you have a smooth transition, but don't bend over backwards to coddle a poor performer.
