How long for an offer after reference check?

Hi,

I had an interview and then shadowed, which was followed by a request for references which were completed yesterday am. I am just wondering how soon they would let me know if they were doing a formal job offer? Would I have to wait for a background check?

In my experience it can be a day to a week or two. In my area background checks usually occur after the employment offer which is contingent upon passing background checks.
