How to handle this situation (requesting time off)?

Published

I started working full time just 2 weeks ago at a LTC facility. Today I was called by a hospital to start orientation for PRN work next week. Ideally I would like to work at both places, but how do I go about telling the place I just started at that I need to take 3 days off next week?? It will be less than a week's notice and I haven't exactly established myself with the nurse manager yet!

Maybe you will get very sick all of a sudden next weeK? just kidding (well, kind of), but I honestly think you are stuck between a rock and a hard place with this one. IMO honesty is your best policy. You might lose the LTC job, but I can't see any other way around it unless you want to be sneaky.

Tell your supervisor you need off for personal reasons. They really do not need more than that. Be prepared to go to Plan B (whatever that is) if your request is denied. You have to decide how far to push.

Yeah, it's tough! It makes it even worse since the NM doesn't have a lot of staff to fall back on to come in for me.

Plan B would be saying "lol nevermind!"
