LVN in Texas looking for a change. Have 2 kiddos, age 7 and almost one and unfortunately we live far away from family. What are your hours in Home Health like? How do you handle child care? Just looking at options. Thanks!

I work per diem, so I set my own hours and pick my days. I leave after I put them on the bus, I'm home to get them off the bus. Depending on the day I might spend 1-2 hours finishing up paperwork once we are all home.

If if you need full time (for benefits) hours can be a bit less flexible. The best way to know is connect with an agency and ask them, then be sure to talk to some nurses to get a real feel. Some places will allow you to work per visit too, which gives you flexibility.

Specializes in home health, hospice, wound care.

What part of Texas? I know one of the companies I work PRN, they hire LVN's for different shifts so people have some flexibility. I worked home health as a single mom and never had trouble with child care. When she started school I worked from drop off to pick up and then charted after she went to bed. Also a lot of opportunities for on call/weekends in home health or hospice.

Whether you work intermittent visit home health or extended care, you can set your own hours as you have discussed with your employer. I have known of more than one nurse who worked extended care cases who ended their shift at 2 or 2:30 pm so that they could be home for their children. Of course this takes some coordination between you, the agency, and the involved client(s). Visit schedules are easier to arrange as long as you get your required visits done.

Thank you all! I've always heard "flexible" but I wondered exactly what that meant. Currently work in a school district. WONDERFUL and love it so much. Time off is great. LOVE the kids. Money is terrible. 17k a year. Don't want to be greedy...because I know how hard a job you love is to come by, but working 3 days a week for more money is tempting depending on day...
