Hey, I'm working on a case study and I can't seem to find the information needed to answer a question anywhere! The question is.. what could cause a patient's cheeks to billow outward with every respiration given by a ventilator? I've searched by books, the internet, articles, etc to no avail. If anyone could help me out or point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Shouldn't be air getting by unless there's a cuff leak on the ET tube.

the cuff of the trach or et tube is not fully inflated and the airway below the tube may or may not be obstructed as well.
see post #13 on this sticky thread: https://allnurses.com/nursing-student-assistance/any-good-iv-127657.html - any good iv therapy or nursing procedure web sites. look for complications of mechanical ventilation within the weblinks.
