Hiring nurses in ED

Published

Does anyone know if there is something in NY State that requires a new hire in the ED must have one year of Med Surg under their belt?

To my knowledge, there is no law requiring that. There is an "unwritten rule" that many nurses feel a new grad should do a year of med-surg before anything else, and if you are hearing this, that's probably where it is coming from.

I dont think this would fall under any type of state regulation. It is probably just a policy of the hospital.

SInce I last posted the question, I did find out in NY State it is a requirement in DOH regulations that they have a year of clinical experience under their belt - doesn't say it has to be your institution. Thank you for the help
