we are a 13 bed ED and have two guards on 3-11 and one 11-7 same as you. They are also responsbile for the entire house. i try to have them stationed when not making rounds at our ED door since this is the only way in the hospital after 8p. I institued ED techs though which has helped - they go through a crisis intervention class and get certified which helps. we have off site property also and they patrol that once a shift on the 3-11 and not the night shift - that was a union request. you are not alone - if they are busy upstairs in behavioral health and we get something in the ED we are on our own - we rely on local PD but we all know how they love to help.

Struggling with off shifts and weekends and CT's. Techs supposedly can not hook tubing from power injector to IV site. Expected RN from ED to do which you know is going over like a lead balloon. What is everyone else doing. We are being told they have to hook tubing, monitor for infilitation during test phase (couple of seconds) and then can leave.

We utilize fax reports - we fill in pertinent items on formed sheet and fax to ICU and other areas -
  6. Would love to hear what other ED's are doing to improve patient satisfaction:lol2:

I want to hire some techs in our facility - anyone with requirements needed in NY State? What are they allowed to do in other facilities?
  8. I do work at a Catholic hospital and yes we can do the above only in the event of a sexual assault - the sexual assault policy in our facility includes offering the emergency contraception medication after informed consent or giving them a script to fill.

SInce I last posted the question, I did find out in NY State it is a requirement in DOH regulations that they have a year of clinical experience under their belt - doesn't say it has to be your institution. Thank you for the help

We are a union hospital also, staff of about 22, they do self scheduling. For me as a manager it doesn't always work out - way for them to request their days off. I put the six week schedule out blank, rule is they have one time to fill in the required amount for each day, all do every other weekend. If not acceptable that one time, then I do it.

Does anyone know if there is something in NY State that requires a new hire in the ED must have one year of Med Surg under their belt?
