Hip surgery

Hi everyone!

My son (7 years old) is going to have a femoral osteotomy with release of his adductors on December 23rd. He'll be in a spica cast for 6 weeks. He has CP and has hip dislocation.

Could you tell me what to expect in the post-op period? How long do these hospitalizations usually last?

We are going to request that he comes home with a foley. He is incontinent and we don't want his cast to ruin. Is this unreasonable?

I'm not necessarily looking for medical advice-- I just want to know what to expect.

Thanks so much,

Dani

I have taken care of lots of kids with spicas..most of the docs are reluctant to use a foley d/t increased chance of infection. truthfully; when diapered and the cast petaled with saran wrap (old trick) we had very little problem with cast breakdown. now the other end; that could be an issue if he ends up with loose stools!!
