Hello everyone. Im not a nurse, but it has always been my dream. I would LOVE to be a L&D nurse. I have no clue what courses I need or how to go about it. Any info/advice would be great. Thanks :)

Hello,
I am a pre nursing student. What you need to do is go to your local community college or university (where ever you plan on attending school) and speak with the nursing advisor . They will be able to tell you all about getting started with the requirements. But ususally all schools require one quarter of inorganic chem, one quarter of organic chem, intro to psychology, life span development, intermediate algebra, english 101, 2 quarters anatomy and physiology, one quarter microbiology. Those are usually the basics some schools require more pre-reqs esp if you want to apply to a Bachelors program. Once you have finished all the pre-reqs then you apply to nursing school.
As for becoming an L&D nurse that will be something you do once you graduate or have almost graduated nsg school. You can apply for residency positions in L&D as a graduate nurse or you may be able to mentor in L&D while in school and get to know the staff and ask them about nurse residency programs that they offer. I hope that helps you out! don't be discourged if it seems like a lot of classes just to be able to apply, if nursing is what you really want to do then it will be a labor of love getting through them all. Good luck and kudos on deciding to persue (sp?) a career in nursing !

Hey there and welcome to allnurses.com and our forum. Be sure to check out the stickies above for reading suggestions and duties listed for OB nurses. These will give you a great start as to finding out general info about what we do, day to day, as OB/GYN and newborn nurses.
Again, welcome to our forum. Looking so forward to hearing more from you.
