kali, a[color=#333333]1.what brought you into the field of nursing?

i loved science, and i loved learning the in's and out's of the human body. i found the disease process and how it affected all the different body systems facinating. also, i have always been a people person, and i thought i could make a difference.

2.what abilities and characteristics are necessary in the field of nursing?

knowledge, critical thinking, team work, humility, honesty, integrity, compassion, and assertiveness.

[color=#333333]

3.what type of educational background do you have that helped you to obtain your [color=#0000cc]j[color=#0000cc]ob?

as degree in biology with an empasis on human anatomy/phisiology. as in nursing

[color=#333333]4.what are your duties and responsibilities?

wow there are so many, i'll try my best. administer medications, patient education, patient safety, adherence to joint commission standards, practicing within my scope of practice, wound care, mandatory reporting (child/elder abuse, domestic violence). maintaining competencies (bls, acls, pals, nrp) waitress, concierge, delegation, cordination of care, and much more.

5.what do you like about your job?

i love interacting with patients, giving care to those who really need and want it. holding the hand of patients who are scared. i love educating patients and seeing them get better. i love giving medications to ease suffering and pain, i love participating in life saving interventions. i love when patients truely appreciate the hard work we put in. i love the co-worker who will assist me with turns when they are slammed just like me. i love the seasoned nurses who help me with every stupid question i come up with. i love hearing wonderful stories from my patients, hearing about their families and so on.

6.what do you least like about your job?

i dont love all my co-workers, those who have lost all compassion and give sub-par care to their patients. its really hard to give your best effort to educate a patient knowing that they are unlikely to adhere to the treatment plan. i dont like it when i have a patient who i cant help, who i know will be leaving this earth shortly and there is nothing i can do but offer my support.

i dont like pee, sounds odd but pee that looks like root beer, or orange soda makes me want to vomit. also, i dont enjoy that the suction canisters that suck all the mucus that is brown/green/yellow/red will sit on the wall until its at least half full before anyone changes it...barf.

[color=#333333]7.what are some of the challenges you face in your career?

i have faced many challenges. being a new nurse is rough, adjusting to real world nursing was a shock. the 12 hour shifts are challenging, night shifts are challenging. juggling a family and career have been tough for me. charting!!!! nursing school does not even scrape the surface with charting.

[color=#333333]8.what are the greatest rewards in your career?

i am a sucker for my old frail patients, who are sweet as can be. love most of them, some are mean and angry and never satisfied. but really connecting to a patient and doing your very best to help them in every way possible makes everything worth while. finding and reporting a change in condition promptly and having a good outcome really makes you feel like you are needed and you are making a difference. the smiles that your patients give you when they are leaving the hospital in better shape then they came are priceless.

[color=#333333]9.what motivates you to continue your career in the nursing field?

i think i was drawn to nursing because i am a life long learner. i love learning new things, and with nursing it is an ever changing field. i want to continue my career because it is what i love to do, and i am good at it. also, i want to continue my education not because i want more money or more notoriety, but because i want to improve my clinical practice.

[color=#333333]10.what advice can you give to a student who wants to pursue in a career in nursing?

go into nursing because you truely want to improve the health and wellness of your patients. that big pay check will look a whole lot smaller if you are unhappy with your job. get involved with your community, it looks good on a resume and it will give you much more in the terms of personal satisfaction. study hard, put your best food forward and achieve your dreams.
