HELP with profile on my resume

Published

Hi everyone:

I'm in my last semester of Nursing school and we have to put together a resume. I need help with my profile????

Ive worked 17 years in an OB/GYN office so have tons of experience with OB/GYN

I am looking to get a job in a Womens Hospital doing Labor and Delivery.

Can someone help ????

You may have 17 years working in OB/GYN (as what? office LPN? MA? ward clerk? CNA?) but those years are not as a nurse. You can mention them in your cover letter and interview but it would be a mistake to rely on them as useful information for a hiring manager who's sifting through a bazillion new grad resumes. Will you do a senior capstone in OB? Mention that in your resume; get references from your preceptor and OB instructor who can testify to your aptitude and competence and readiness for more learning. Then your best bet is to go to your college career advising office and ask for help in building your resume.

It's very hard for a new grad to get a job in a specialty area, as I am sure you're discovering. That doesn't mean you shouldn't try, but be realistic.

Your job now is to get a job in nursing, any job. When you get your foot in a hospital door, even the day you go for your general interview, make a point of dropping by the OB dept and speaking to the nurse manager so she can see your smiling face. When whatever floor you're on hires you, tell your manager you'd be happy to volunteer to float to OB if the need arises and nobody else wants to go. When the hospital gives OB-related CE offerings, take them. Join the local OB nursing association, go to meetings, show your smiling face, network. Do these even if you are working on LTC. Your goal will be to show interest and pick up some useful nurse-level knowledge along the way.

I agree with nurseprnRN ditto all the way...
