Hi! I'm a Labor and Delivery nurse and love my job...but work 12-hour NIGHT shift. It's just wearing me down. I got a call for a job interview on Thursday with Gambro for acute dialysis nurse...I have absolutely no experience in this field (have worked med-surg, cardiac and 8 months CCU/ICU.) Can you please tell me more about this specialty...I love people and I want a rewarding nursing career. The person that called me told me I'd be going to the hospital and taking care of renal patients in that setting, not a clinic....I've read here that you either love it or hate it....they say the same about my current specialty. What makes people hate it...what makes people love it? Thanks for your help in making this important decision. C.O.

Hi...I tried HD and found it interesting but could not adjust back from nights in ICU to an 8 bed acute clinic inside a hospital. If you are a day nurse and enjoy a fast paced team environment, like hi tech machines, and enjoy putting your critical care skills to work I think you should check it out. My downfall was my dislike of the day shift atmosphere and the constant phones, and the turnover ov patients q 3 hrs. I also couldn't handle the loooong daytime hours...frequently the nurses started at 6 am and didn't get home til after 10 at night due to emergencies.
I prefer my 12 hr night ICU shifts with 2-3 patients for 12 hrs. So back to that I go....LOL. It is always nice tho to look into another specialty...it helps us keep perspective.
Good luck and hope you find what you're looking for. :)
