Hi
I'm graduating this May (2008) with a BSN ans will be eligible to take NCLEX this summer. I've just started really looking for a job and it seems like every job posted is for a nurse extern or requires some experience. Does anyone have advice on where to look, who to contact, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Honestly, just apply to a few departments you are interested in, keeping in mind that some units are more friendly to new grads: Med/Surg, Telemetry, Ortho.... And many hospitals have new grad training programs for those areas and other specialties such as ICU, ED, Pediatrics, Mother/Baby, etc. Look at the websites of the hospitals you are interested in. The bigger the hospital or organization, the more likely they are to have something for new grads. Do you live in a small town? If so, you might be looking to go to a bigger city for more opportunity. If you are not totally against getting a job now, I'd suggest working as an extern. I loved my extern job and was guaranteed an RN position (however, I moved out of the area and found something else).
OH and the new job I have specifically states in the job description "1 year experience preferred" so I'm not sure if they counted my extern exp. or not, either way, I certainly don't have 1 yr. RN experience and still got the job.
Point is, apply anyway, it never hurts to try. Oh, and try calling the nurse recruiter of the hospitals you are interested in and see what they tell you about hiring new grads and how to go about it.
GOOD LUCK!!!!:heartbeat

Hi Jello!
Just in case that you are looking for a review center (NCLEX) try to check JRC ( Juno Review Center) they have an upcoming review starting May 3 and will run for 8 consecutive Saturdays until June 21st (9am-5pm). They offer an interactive review class and have an unlimited computer access..good luck!

My advice is to skip Human Resources altogether. Instead, call the manager/director of the department where you want to work and ask if he/she would be willing to interview a new grad. State your qualifications early in the conversation. After all, he/she is the hiring official and will make the ultimate decision whether or not to interview/hire you. After you have him/her on your side, then you can go through HR channels (and job descriptions be d**ned! LOL).
Good luck!
