I have been offered two student internships/PCT positions? I accepted both and need to choose today?
1. 11.90 per hour, full time in the summer, min. of every other weekend during school 16 hours, this will be in the ER, I have days 7-3. I like this job because a lot of my friends at school will be in the ER, i have days which means i can still have a life after work however this is more of a tech position rather then nursing and I do not like blood and fluids so perhaps ER may be a little overwhelming???
2. 11.59 an hour, this position only 6 students were selected from about 5 nursing schools, i would be med-surg and would have a preceptor to shadow, I think i have days but will not know until about june 12th when i start orientation, per diem work available during the school year. I feel like this is the best learning experience but may not be as fun as with friends in the er who i can lean on.This job gives me a little more time off in the summer. I feel grateful because they only took 6 but i think this job may be borning following a nurse for x amount of hours a day??
Would one would you do?
please help

Have you had any clinical experience yet? Do you have any idea how busy a staff nurse is for 8-12 hours per day? If you think this type of work may be boring, what do you plan to pursue upon graduation?
I'm certain that both positions have their pros and cons, and you will have the opportunity to learn in either one. But it concerns me greatly that you seem to be more focused on having fun with your co-workers than gaining valuable experience. Please be careful about how you present yourself to the staff you will work with. If they sense that you are bored or disinterested, I guarantee you will spend the summer doing vitals and running errands. If they sense that you are interested and conscientious, they will do their best to give you a great experience.

Pray about it and see where your heart leads you.
Boring in the sense that I may not have as much hands on experience due to the nature of the preceptorship and that it is more of a shadowing experience versus a pct position. Boring was incorrect terminology on my part. I have had clinical experience. My learning style is hands-on. By no means did I mean boring in the sense that I think you took it. I apologize if it came off that way. I do understand how hard nurses work.
I'm glad you responded and clarified your meaning :)
I truly think you would be well served by either position. If there is time, you may want to check with the manager of the med/surg unit and inquire as to whether that job involves simply observation, or includes supervised practice.
It is my guess that with time, your preceptor will gradually allow you to perform some basic nursing functions under his/her direct supervision. If that is not the plan, then the ER position maybe more satisfying. I would also ask whether you will consistently be assigned to the same preceptor and follow his/her schedule. That would be ideal, as it will allow you to establish a relationship in which the nurse is able to evaluate your learning and assign appropriate tasks to you. If you work with a different nurse every day, that may never happen, and again, the ER job might be preferable.
Good luck!

Hi Help me choose please,
In my experience both places can be overwhelming. However, in med-surg you can learn so much, and it will prepare you for any kind of nursing ever. Lets say it is the boot camp for nursing (lol) Once you get through it, you will be prepared for any type of nursing. The ER is high paced, and everything is moving quickly, and the nurses really do not get in depths with the diagnosis. If you want to learn, and get prepared for anything try med-surg. however, if you like to move and like the quick paced enviroment the Er is the place. Nevertheless, You are going to deal with blood regardless of either place you choose. I hope this helps.
